Painter

Harriet Halstead

My obsession with elemental landscapes, light, colour and how to describe them in paint, began with a Cornish childhood. I attended Falmouth School of Art, Bath Academy of Art for BA and Brighton for Teacher training. I taught in Secondary Schools and Museum Education in Yorkshire and Norfolk. After Retirement I was able to spend time developing my painting.

ABOUT US

I moved back to Cornwall in 2019 and am at my happiest painting out of doors. I like to work directly from landscape usually in watercolour or pastel and go to some lengths to find compositions that appeal to me. I rarely include figures as I enjoy the ambiguity of scale in natural forms.

My studio works are derived from many studies of a particular place and incorporate a slightly moving view as if one were walking through or over rocks, looking up and down or peering over an edge.

My pointillist style derives from Seurat’s colour theories. I believe pointillism offers both an abstract delight in the interaction of colours when viewed closely and the evocation of an image when viewed at distance. Movement, light, and a sense of flux challenge the solidity and strength of the forms.

I am a member of the Cornwall Watercolour Society.  I have also exhibited in group exhibitions at Half Acre Studios, The Rock Institute, and The Penwith Gallery.
