Edwina Hannaford

Edwina Hannaford has lived in East Looe all her life and attended Plymouth and Falmouth Art Colleges. On leaving college she started a graphic design and illustration business working across Cornwall from her studio in Looe and Liskeard.

After 25 years running her business ‘The Artworks’, she moved into politics and was elected as a district councillor in 2003 and a Cornwall Councillor in 2009. As part of her councillor duties, Edwina was asked to open the Ebenezer Gallery Summer Show in June this year and was inspired by other artists exhibiting to pick up her paintbrushes again after a gap of over 13 years.

Edwina's design studio specialised mainly in wildlife illustration for information and tourism leaflets and had never really tackled seascapes, but as she looks out over Looe harbour from her home she decided she wanted to capture for others the views she takes for granted.

Designers gouache with its strong opaque colours gives Edwina's painting a strong, colourful, sunny, graphic quality, capturing the vibrant blue and green hues of the sea and the brightly coloured fishing and pleasure boats in the harbour. Edwina said, “I find painting very therapeutic, I’ve looked at the view of Looe harbour from my lounge all my life. I love the fact its constantly changing; with the tides and seasons,it’s a hive of activity at the heart of our community.” Edwina has expanded her repertoire to include other Cornish ports including; Looe, Polperro, Polruan, Fowey and Mevagissey.
