Nicky May

I have painted since childhood, but my formal training was through the Open College of the Arts (courses in painting and drawing). I also spent many years under the tutelage of Norman Rechter, a renowned European watercolourist. In addition I studied studio ceramics at Sunningwell School of Art and the Royal Forest of Dean College where I graduated with Distinction. Watercolour is my first and enduring love, but I am also enjoying the delicious texture of oils. My starting point is almost always landscape, and from observation my work leans towards the abstract. With paint (as with clay) I am searching for a sense of “rightness”, of “truth to materials”, balancing mastery of the medium with the mystery of allowing the paint to do what it wants to do. I am a member of Cornwall Watercolour Society, Bude Art Society, East Cornwall Society of Artists and the Cornwall Ceramics and Glass Group. In 2016 I won first prize in the Endelienta Open Art Competition. In 2015 I pre-selected for the Royal West of England Open Exhibition, in 2014  I was selected for the South West Academy of Arts Open Exhibition in 2014 and in 2011 and 2012 I was Golden Brush Award winner at Bude Art Society. My Other Career started with volunteering in the UK (as a child care worker), Papua New Guinea (as a teacher), and then Kenya (working with women’s groups). I went on to work for Oxfam for 6 years, first as Country Representative in Kenya, and then as Deputy Overseas Director. After this I was a senior manager for a series of voluntary organisations, as well as doing freelance work evaluating the effectiveness of development projects in Africa and Asia.
