Val Andrews

I have lived in Cornwall for many years. I attended Weston super Mare School of Art and then trained as a primary school teacher at St Mark’s and St John’s in Plymouth specialising in ceramics as my main subject. On completing my training I was invited to exhibit at the Newlyn Gallery, The Museum in Plymouth and at the Brewhouse Gallery in Taunton. Since retiring from teaching I began to make ceramics once again and sold them at local craft fairs. It was at one of these fairs I was approached by a potter who suggested I join the East Cornwall Society of Artists.

I mainly work in stoneware making my own slips and glazes using some locally sourced materials. More recently I have begun to experiment with white earthenware and the use of coloured underglazes. What began as tiles to try out new techniques became very popular in their own right. My inspiration comes from the Cornish countryside and beaches. I can be seen picking up pieces of driftwood for mixed media sculptures when walking my two dogs along the beach.
